Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia and his housing startup Samara, have unveiled their first product. Backyard is their customizable ADU that they hope to make housing simpler and more affordable.
An ADU or accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is also known as “mother-in-law suite,” adding room for a studio or or spare room.
Backyard studio units start at $289,000 and one-bedroom units start at $329,000, including installation costs. Customers can also choose between five colors, two roof designs, and customizable windows, doors, and decks. The entire design process for Backyard takes place on the Samara website.
You can configure your Backyard unit now, but it’s currently available for California residents.
