A design-loving Los Angeles couple wanted to build their dream home ahead of retirement. So, they chose New York–based Aanda Architects to reimagine their existing Spanish-style home.
The result is Centered Home, a beautifully minimal single-story space that will be “central” to the couple’s life as they spend more time at home.
Although screened from the street by a cluster of cacti, the entrance’s teak cladding provides an inviting welcome.
The home’s open-plan design cleverly hides storage and other infrastructure within its walls. Private spaces include a bedroom, bathroom, and space for meditation.
Public spaces for cooking, dining, lounging, and exercising, all located around a “cube” that’s the center of the house. Each area can be sectioned by pocket doors for flexibility.
Large windows and sculptural skylights provide bright and airy interior spaces, and unique lighting throughout the day. The use of full-height windows also connects the interior to the outdoor landscape.
